Multi-Silicon Wafers (multicrystalline
/ MC wafers)
Multicrystalline wafers are used for multicrystalline
solar cells, the most common photovoltaic technology (about
4/7 of the silicon-wafer based world market) – probably
everyone has already seen the typical blue solar cells with
a characteristic reflection pattern. The material of these
wafers consists of irregular mm- to cm-sized crystalline
regions.
Swiss Wafers AG produces multicrystalline wafers mainly
from ingots produced in-house. Multicrystalline wafers are
produced in one size which corresponds to the modern worldwide
standard of our customers.
Characteristic properties of multicrystalline technology
are
• |
wafers are always square so that they fit together
in the module in an optimal way |
• |
material usage is very efficient because the fabricated
ingot is also square, efficiently bricketed into 16
blocks sized 156 mm x 156 mm |
• |
requirements for raw material quality are not
extreme – e.g. broken wafers can be remelted |
• |
electrical output of solar cells and modules per
area is high, although lower by about 10% compared
to monocrystalline technology. This is compensated
by lower wafer cost. |
