Market development
In less-developed countries without extended electricity
supply network system the electricity production via photovoltaics
(off-orid) is one of few electricity sources in rural areas.
In this case photovoltaic technology is already competitive.
In the highly developed countries with well completed electricity
supply network systems, the conventional electricity production
via burning of fossil fuels and nuclear power is the cheaper
alternative – on the short term – in comparison
to photovoltaics, but with severe consequences for the environment
of tomorrow.
This is the reason for promotion of electricity production
via photovoltaics (predominantly on-grid systems) in developed
countries. The basis of worldwide promotion of renewable
energies, including photovoltaic technologies, is the Kyoto
protocol. This agreement contains binding defined goals
for all signing countries for reduction of greenhouse gase,
especially carbon dioxide production. Concretely the goal
is to reduce of worldwide production of greenhouse gases
by 5% until 2012, in comparison to the 1990 level.
For this reason of worldwide promotion of electricity
production via photovoltaics, a massive increase of production
volumes by the producer of photovoltaic components and systems
has already started. We expect steady middle- term growth
of the worldwide photovoltaic market at continued high growth
rates. For the long-term growth the experts are not sure
about the exact growth rate of photovoltaics, but it seems
sure that the photovoltaic market will grow steadily. The
expectations for 2010 reached from 3’500 MWp to 6’000
MWp and for 2020 up to 50’000 MWp of newly installed
PV power per year.
Our well established partnerships with our supplier and
customers on one side and the extensive know-how of our
employees in handling, conditioning of silicon and silicon
wafer production on the other side put Swiss Wafers AG in
a good position to participate in the growth of the PV market.
